Although ignored, there are over seven hundred college art museums in the US alone. This number, in comparison with different kinds of artwork museums, makes college artwork museums perhaps the most important category of art museums in the country. While the primary of those collections may be traced to learning collections developed in artwork academies in Western Europe, they are now associated with and housed in centers of higher schooling of all kinds. In Italy, the art tourism of the Grand Tour became a major business from the 18th century onwards, and cities made efforts to make their key works accessible. The Capitoline Museums started in 1471 with a donation of classical sculpture to the town of Rome by the Papacy, whereas the Vatican Museums, whose collections are still owned by the Pope, trace their foundation to 1506, when the recently discovered Laocoön and His Sons was placed on public display. A series of museums on different topics had been opened over subsequent centuries, and most of the buildings of the Vatican were function-constructed as galleries.
