art museumAn early royal treasury opened to the public was the Grünes Gewölbe of the Kingdom of Saxony within the 1720s. Throughout history, large and costly works of art have usually been commissioned by non secular institutions and monarchs and been displayed in temples, church buildings, and palaces. Although these collections of artwork had been private, they have been typically made available for viewing for a portion of the public. In classical times, non secular establishments began to perform as an early type of art gallery. Wealthy Roman collectors of engraved gems (including Julius Caesar) and different valuable objects often donated their collections to temples.
